7 ways to boost your productivity during the holidays

After enjoying a nice, long Thanksgiving holiday and engaging in gift-shopping, holiday festivities, and holiday cheer in general, going back to work can sometimes feel dreary. While you’re stuck in the office, you may find yourself daydreaming about going home and snuggling in front of the fire, eating holiday foods, and even jumping online to browse the latest holiday sales.

After enjoying a nice, long Thanksgiving holiday and engaging in gift-shopping, holiday festivities, and holiday cheer in general, going back to work can sometimes feel dreary. While you’re stuck in the office, you may find yourself daydreaming about going home and snuggling in front of the fire, eating holiday foods, and even jumping online to browse the latest holiday sales.

But — as an inbound marketer, the month of December will be vital to your upcoming 2014 campaign. After all, you want to start off the New Year with a bang and rise above your competitors, right?

Stay awake and re-energize this month by following these 7 tips for boosting your daily productivity.

1. Set daily and weekly goals

Goals can serve as a constant reminder about what you need to accomplish. If you don’t do it already, make daily or weekly to-do lists and make sure you stick to them. You’ll feel much more accomplished at the end of the day when you realize you’ve met all your goals.

2. Set aside time to eat and sleep

Food and sleep fuel your brain and will provide your body with the nourishment it needs to stay focused and ahead of the game. Don’t let the holidays distract you from these vital needs. Your body (and your boss!) will thank you for it

3. Automate your work as best as possible

Use social media scheduling tools such as Hootsuite to schedule social media posts ahead of time, and schedule blogs to be published at predetermined dates and times. The more automation tools you can use, the more time you’ll have for more important tasks.

4. Schedule breaks into your work day

15- and 20-minute breaks throughout the day can give your brain the refreshing break it needs to stay productive. Although 20 minutes can seem like a long time when you’re trying to meet deadlines and finish projects, you’ll think differently when you sit back down and churn out work twice as fast as you did before.

5. Avoid multitasking

Research has shown that multitasking can actually lower your productivity by up to 40%. Focus on working on just one task at a time, and you’ll end up developing more accurate and high-quality work as a result.

6. Keep socializing to a minimum

The holidays may have you in a cheerful enough mood to motivate you to reach out to old friends and loved ones and make plans for holiday get-togethers, but keep socializing at a minimum when you’re at work. Reserve phone calls and text messages for when you get home, and stay focused on work while you’re at the office.

7. Stay calm and don’t panic

Business isn’t always perfect — losing an important client or failing to receive a payment on time can really throw a wrench in your work day and affect your productivity. Whatever happens, take a deep breath, calm down, assess the situation, and focus on moving on. After all, tomorrow is another day and a fresh start.
