A Downturn Economy Breeds Ingenuity

I had an interesting meeting this morning with a company pitching a great new idea. We were discussing the nuts and bolts of their new and very innovative web system and how it was coming together at just the right time. A time when their clients need more help raising money than they ever have before due to the poor economy. One of the guys mentioned that 35 of the current Fortune 100 companies were started in what was considered a bad or poor economic climate. Why? Poor economies force businesses to get creative. A poor economy coupled with fiscal adversity, forces companies to stretch their best minds to find the next big thing or to advance what they are already working on to the next level. In a poor economy companies are forced to do this as a matter of survival. Great companies have this mindset in all envirionments.

BIGSHOT tends to thrive in a tough economic environment. We grew consistently for the two years following the downturn in 2001. Why? I think for two reasons. We are a mid level ad agency that hasn't developed the layers of personnel that tend to erode the creative process and create additional, in my opionion unnecessary, cost. Translation: Our clients are more engaged with our top creatives and our internal machine isn't so cumbersome that we can't turn projects, on a tight budget, quickly. We are able to respond to customer needs in hours instead of days or weeks. In times of shrinking advertising budgets and high expectations, our kind of reasonable cost with high touch service is more important to people than the frills of a larger agency. BIGSHOT's recurring challenge is to educate potential clients about this valuable combination of value and service even in good economic times.

At BIGSHOT we are driven by the success of our clients. We gauge our success on how we help our clients grow and not by the design and marketing awards we win. For us it's not about our cute little advertising idea and how clever we are, but rather how many conversions did our clients search campaign and website produce this week and how can we improve on that number next week. Our client relationships are strong and long lasting, in good times and bad, becasue we work hard to grow their businesses everyday. Want us to do the same for you? Call or email us, we will help your bottom line, even during these tough times.
