All you have to do is take your URL and add the following to it: tp=1
That's it. Let's look at an example. The URL of the main Joomla! website is: "http://www.joomla.org". Let's say that I want to know where the user1 position is. Well, all I have to do is go to the following url: http://www.joomla.org/?tp=1
All of a sudden, the Joomla homepage goes from this:

... to ...

It looks like Joomla.org does is not using the user1 module position in their template at all.
If you are an administrator, there is another way to do this. It takes a few more steps, so I never do it. However, to be thorough, I feel it is important to mention it.
From the Administrator:
- Click "Extensions" -> "Template Manager"
- Click on the template that is set as the "default"
- Click the "Preview" icon in the toolbar.
The more and more Joomla! sites you build, the more time this trick will save you.
